Traversing Firewalls
Yahoo! has licensed the Distinct SOCKS component to enable users of Yahoo! Messenger use Messenger even when behind a firewall. The Distinct component enables hosts on one side of a SOCKS server to gain access to hosts on the other side of a SOCKS Server, without requiring direct IP-reachability.

"Some of our users were behind corporate firewalls at their workplaces and wanted to but were unable to use Yahoo! Pager," said Brian Park, producer of Yahoo! Pager, Yahoo! Inc. "Together with Distinct, we were able to offer our users an ideal solution enabling them to connect to Yahoo! Pager, and to do so both quickly and reliably".

Support for Yahoo! Messenger
Support for Yahoo! Messenger is provided by Yahoo! Although Yahoo! licenses software from Distinct Corporation to enable users to use Yahoo! Messenger through their SOCKS enabled firewalls, Distinct is not involved in any direct support to Yahoo! Customers who must revert to Yahoo! for assistance.

What is SOCKS
SOCKS is a protocol that permits users to traverse their personal or corporate networks without direct IP-reachability. The Distinct SOCKS component permits software developers to incorporate the SOCKS client within their own applications so that their users are able to use the application without difficulty in situations where outside access is only permitted through a SOCKS proxy server. More information on Distinct Socks component available here.
